70’s cold buffet – The retro party

70’s cold buffet – The retro party tasting will be a collection of the popular classics that no party buffet could be without in the 70’s and 80’s.

The party

Whether it was a birthday, a wedding, a housewarming party or just because, almost every week someone had something to celebrate. The circle of acquaintances was large and usually half the village met up with the neighbourhood and the family, because they themselves were members of the fire brigade, the shooting club or the male choral society.

70s and 80s party music

To the hits of the 1970-1979s and the NDW, the New German Wave, there was not only heavy dancing and flirting in the party cellars, but also plenty of food and drink. Not to forget the shrill Glam Rock in the 70s and some of the best Hard&Heavy songs originated from that time. The dance floor was also stormed and we celebrated and danced to DISCO music. Later, pop music took over before being replaced by acid, dance, techno, hip hop and house music in the ’90s.

Music that I, as DJ Lauter-Wirtz, also like to play myself.

But in the ’90s, the party buffet was no longer chic or cool. Only in a retro wave in 2018 ff. do people remember the good old days. Or is that because of my age?

The physical well-being

There was usually a keg of beer and a soda. Later, in the ’80s, cola was added. A good punch was just as much a part of the early summer months as standing blues on the dance floor.

Conversations at the cold buffet

Next to the dance room and the bar, the room with the buffet was the most communicative place. Here it was not so noisy and armed with paper plates and plastic forks one could have a good chat before going back to the dance floor.

The buffet is open!

The drinks

The cold duck, woodruff punch or strawberry punch were a must. StichPimPuLi was also on the table from time to time. Beer was the standard drink; it usually came to the bar by the barrel and was freshly tapped there. The ladies usually drank sparkling wine, wine or Kuller Pfirsich, and later in the evening, they would add schnapps or Korn to the mix, which didn’t always ensure a clear situation the next day.

Some people had a Bloody Mary the next day to alleviate the hangover.

From my point of view, the cocktail parties only started in the late ’80s and early ’90s, when it was hip to drink a mojito or a pina colada. Which led to even more regret the next day from the night before.

The music

The music was varied. In the early ’70s it was mostly German Schlager, unless you were old enough to listen to glam rock or hard rock. At the end of the ’70s there was a lot of disco music. In the early ’80s, the NDW New German Wave emerged, and with Modern Talking and Sandra at the latest, pop music made its entrance.
